    5 TB Backup Hard Drive

I connected the backup drive to my 15 year old computer and backed up 1.22 Gigabytes of pictures. It worked great!

    It’s a Seagate

The HDD drive arrived earlier than expected. I was surprised the package said it was a Basic Seagate. I looked it up and other versions come with software and other features. Would I have purchased the HDD if it had been advertised as a “Basic” model? I’m not sure and since the seller did not identify it as such, I didn’t have the opportunity to compare. Copied 7,009 items from my document folder in 3 minutes, 9 seconds. Copied 26,538 pictures in 21 minutes, 11 seconds. No reason to rate it less than a five, it’s a Seagate.

    Bought it again

I have this same Seagate model. It works well and I wanted a second backup drive, so I bought it again. It is fast and I have had no issues, plus the Christmas price was hard to resist.

    So far so good.

I bought this external hard drive to replace a Western Digital one I purchased that crapped out three months after I bought it. I should have read deeper into the reviews when I purchased it because as it turns out, plenty of people had warned not to buy it and why. That’s what I get for just looking at the overall rating. This Seagate was plug and play on my Windows 10 system and seems to be operating fine. Like the WD, this one has a sleep mode so that if you haven’t used it in a while, it takes about ten seconds for it to get up and running. I guess that seems to be common with these large external hard drives. The only thing I don’t like is that it appears the Seagate is not meant to lay on it’s side, because that is where the cooling vents are located, which makes me have to lay it flat and take up a larger footprint on my desk. But if that is the worst thing I can come up with, I would say this was a good purchase, as long as I now get a few good years of service out of it.

    Plenty of space.

Photographer….lots of images. large images. I’ve been using Seagate for desktop and portable backup for years. Dependable. And I ask myself the same question I asked when I had a new desktop with 40 megs of storarge (1986)…how the heck am I going to fill this sucker up.

Noisy annoying sound when running back up for iMac.

I bought this Seagate Expansion 16 TB hard drive to use as a time machine to back up my iMac and hard drives. It seems to work well, but is very noisy when backing up. Kind of annoying. I wish it was quieter.

    Works great

The lack of directions is a bit annoying but it is easy to use. You just plug it into your laptop and then find it’s name in your 📂 section. I opted for the 5tb so I knew I had plenty of space for all my school work and the drive quality seems exceptional. I have seen others complaining about how slow it is and I have to disagree. It definitely takes some time to transfer several thousand files at once over but it definitely didn’t take me a whole day to do it. And with it’s size I’ve barely put a dent in it. I also like the size of the HD as it’s not bulky and can sit perfectly on the corner of my laptop without being in the way. I also haven’t noticed it over heating. It does a great job staying cool even if I leave it plugged in all night long or for a couple of days. My only complaint is it could of come with a longer cord. Also my acer laptop won’t eject it even if all my programs are closed it give me an error saying it’s still being used by something. It could be because of my one drive account but I’m not sure. I typically will just shut down my computer and then unplug the HD.

    Good drive for the cost

I got this to replace a dying backup drive, it was easy to hook up, easy to setup to Time Machine, and it works just fine. It’s a bit slow, so I wouldn’t recommend it for a gaming system, unless all you gonna do is backup with it, and the usb cable it came with is a little short.

    Plug and play!

Love my new Seagate portable drive! Much smaller and sleeker than the last external hard drive I had (an older Seagate), with more memory, and *so* much easier to use–true plug-and-play, no more of that annoying formatting. I feel relieved that I can easily back up my files now before my desktop (inevitably) crashes. The old Seagate wasn’t connecting to my computer anymore, but this one is performing flawlessly out of the box. As an older moderately tech-savvy adult (but by no means fluent in all the latest programs and apps), it’s a joy to have something so simple and easy to use that also brings peace of mind.

    Perfect

Perfect external hard drive. I’ve used a few different Seagates and they make reliably functional hard drives. I’ve never had one over heat or have any other issues. In fact, I just got a bunch of data off a friend’s old Seagate hard drive that normally would’ve been lost on most other older drive types. The price they have this drive listed at here is a steal! I got the 4tb for $99. I would absolutely recommend it. It’s nice and small for how much it can actually fit. You could essentially stick it in your pocket if you want to. The drive is simple to use. All you have to do to use it is plug it in to your USB input on your computer, laptop or tablet and it would open on it’s own. If it doesn’t, a simple driver download usually solves the problem. You can also plug this hard drive into your TV to watch videos. Every smart TV has a USB input on it and you can toggle to your hard drive with the input button. Just make sure to eject it after use if you see the option under your drive in inputs.

    Very Happy

First order was damaged in transit and received my refund promptly without having to ask for it.Ordered it again and paid for priority delivery, and item arrived promptly. Using it mainly for video and photo backup. It’s fast, silent and so easy to use. The small footprint is another plus.I don’t need to bother with so many external storage devices and can locate my large files in 1 place. Great product.

seagate drives… treat them right and they will do the same.

been using seagate drives for years and only had 1 fail. ever since talking to one of their techs when i returned it for a replacement they have run with zero data loss or failures. the longest running drive is over 8 years. he said the biggest issue causing a drive to fail is powering it on and off or having windows put in sleep. every 2 years or so i will buy a new drive thats bigger. this drive is 23rds full. lolmovies, music, documents, thousands and thousands of images i trust seagate to store my data. even if one fails again they back their drives with data recovery services.TIP: if you can leave your drive on 24/7 with only a clean and cool place for it to operate.run filters on your pc air vents to. dust bunnies like eating hard drives. ha ha ha

    Worked Perfectly With My iMAC!

This worked great with my very old iMAC. I was a bit concerned on the compatibility; but the old girl aka iMAC recognized the drive immediately. I set up Time Machine and was set. The initial download took quite a bit of time so left it overnight and this moning all backups are there on the drive. The unit is compact and rests happily on the edge of my desk. plugged directly into the iMAC.

Easy set up – really hoping it lasts

I often do not read Amazon descriptions carefully. I thought this was a solid state drive. I’ve had bad luck with the larger versions of Seagate external drives in the past. Every one I’ve owned has developed the “click of death” and I’ve lost data. I really hope they’ve improved with these smaller ones. So far, it’s working ok and appears to transfer data at an average rate — not slow — but not super fast either.

    Solid portable bulk storage option

Solid HDD, fast enough for backups. When writing at certain speeds sounds like a heartbeat, so if there’s anyone in your house with delusion-based mental illness, or who reads too much Edgar Allen Poe, maybe choose an SSD. It’s not loud but it does vibrate, no more than you’d expect for an HDD of this size. There doesn’t seem to be a speed advantage with a USB-C cable, everything transfers at around 250 megabytes/sec on my machine.

Yes, the STGX5000400 5TB USB Powered Drive Works with My Synology DS1621+ NAS!

I was a bit hesitant to get this drive because it wasn’t listed as a compatible drive on Synology’s compatibility page (It wasn’t listed as all actually), but since it was discounted from Amazon warehouse, I figured I would give it a chance. I decided to first plug it into my Windows PC to see why it might have been returned, and saw that it didn’t show up at all, so I went into Disk Management and it was visible there, only it wasn’t formatted. I’m guessing that a non-technical person received it un-formatted like this and didn’t know what to do? Anyways, I hooked it up to my Synology NAS and it recognized the drive, then I formatted it to EXT4 and am now moving all my non-critical files over to it as I type up this review!I did have an older Seagate 4TB USB powered drive that seemed like it was two 2TB drives stripped together to make 4TB (it was thicker and heavier than the regular drives), but I think the USB port on the Synology NAS wasn’t strong enough to power both drives. This was a few years ago, which I figured that by now the tech might be a bit better, which it is!

YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH STORAGE SPACE!

Ever since I got my first 50mb hardcard for the first computer I built in 1985 and paid $300 for it, I have always been running out of storage space for All my life experiences that I have been recording since 1980. This includes tons of live concerts and local bands Video footage. As well as all of the photos from my birth toll now 64.5 years later…. That’s a ton of Life experiences that are always collecting more and more data. I still have a lot of cassette tapes I am trying to get digitized before the tapes go bad…. My last 10tb just maxed out & thru a number of crashed drives started having 2 mirrored drives as backups. So my other 18tb still has space but as I said YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH STORAGE SPACE! I got this one to replace the full one. Just in time too! Just started going through & scanning in all my old photos that took a long time to get through & it’s 20gb worth so far!

20tb questionable for Xbox series x use January 2025

I bought this drive to use with my Xbox series x based on the news I heard in January 2025 where you can use a storage option larger than 16tb. I drive I bought was 20tb for $230. My Xbox is updated and sees the hard drive but doesn’t really know what to do with it. I will update this review once it starts working. For now I gave this hard drive 4 out 5.It’s loudThe case wasn’t fully snapped shut coming out of the box.Power brick takes up outlet space. If you look at my photos below I have 1tb expansion card and 4tb Seagate expansion hard disk. It sees 20tb but doesn’t know what to do with it. Clicking the format button and leaving the Xbox alone doesn’t yield any results. Restarting the Xbox takes me to the “would you like to format this drive screen” I will try to format it on my Windows PC next time.

The first one ordered was defective – quick replacement sent

The online tech support by Seagate leaves a LOT to be desired as the problem was, I could see the device in the printers, scanners and other devices on my computer, but it would not show up in File Manager where I should have been able to “drag and drop” stuff into/onto that drive. I did EVERYTHING I could think of – I tried it on my desktop, then my laptop, turned the computers on and off, unplugged the drive and nothing worked. I went to Seagate’s online support and one of their videos stated, “try another cable – sometimes cables go bad.” Uh, DUH, this portable drive has a very unique and proprietary type of cable! It’s not like one end is a regular USB plug and the other side is a USB-C plug! It’s sort of like a double USB-B or micro-USB plug, but two of them put together and one side is smaller than the other side, so, “try a different cable?” Puh-leaze! However, I requested a return of that original and asked for another of the same hard drive be sent. Got it today and IT WORKS PERFECTLY!!! Yes! I plugged it in and BOOM! There it was in File Manager. Checked the properties and it has the space I expected it to have. Then I did a drag and drop of an MP3 file just to see if there would be any problems and the file copied over to the new hard drive without issue. THIS is what I wanted and am happy to have – a great little external hard drive that works just as it should at an excellent price.

A lot of space for a very good price.

The price was very good and it works as one would expect. The only thing that wasn’t expected is that it only has 25.4 TB of space that can be used. The capacity is indicated to be 28 TB when I go into Properties, so the large 2.6 TB difference is a surprise. I guess there is a difference between binary and decimal, and other things that impact that, so I don’t believe there is deception here. But 2.6 TB difference was definitely a surprise. But so far all else is good. Just knocked it down one star for the large TB difference that wasn’t expected. I would have purchased it even if I’d known the difference however.

    Great, but no Mac/Apple instructions

Setting up a Seagate external hard drive on a Mac can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you’re not familiar with how drives work (trust me, I learned this the hard way!). Here’s my experience and a step-by-step guide to help you get started smoothly. My Experience with the Seagate External Hard DriveWhen I first plugged in my new Seagate external hard drive, it seemed to work like any standard external hard drive. However, being a Mac user, I quickly ran into some issues. The drive came with instructions and an .exe file installer, which I soon discovered is not compatible with Macs (and trying to open it is generally not recommended). After some frustration—about 12 minutes into the process—I was ready to return it. My previous drive setup took just two minutes!** Step-by-Step Instructions **To save you from the same headache, here’s how to set up your Seagate drive properly:Plug in the Drive: Connect your Seagate external hard drive to your Mac. You should see the drive icon appear on your desktop shortly after.Open Disk Utility:Press Command + Space to open Spotlight Search (this is super handy for finding apps quickly).Type “Disk Utility” and hit Enter. In Disk Utility, locate your external hard drive in the left sidebar.Erase and Format the Drive:Select your external hard drive and click on the Erase button at the top of the window.Choose a name for your drive (I recommend something simple) and set the format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).Click Erase. This will prepare the drive for use with your Mac by deleting all existing files.Using Time Machine (if that’s your goal):If you only want to use this drive for Time Machine backups, you can skip the formatting step and simply open Time Machine from System Preferences after plugging in the drive. It will prompt you to format it automatically. BTW, don’t Partition your drive (one for backups and one for daily use. In case of a failure in the drive, you lose everything in all parts of the drive. It’s better to two smaller external drives used for either Time Machine and your daily drive than to partition a big external drive.Important TipsAlways remember to EJECT your external hard drive Every Time before unplugging it (this is crucial!). Failing to do so can lead to data corruption. If you notice that the drive turns on and off randomly at night, consider unplugging it when not in use. This saves wear on the unit as your computer does random updates that wake it up now and again.Additional ResourcesFor those who prefer visual aids, I highly recommend checking out this YouTube tutorial by MacMostVideo: “How Should You Format An External Drive For a Mac? “This video provides a clear walkthrough of formatting an external hard drive specifically for Mac usage.ConclusionOverall, while my initial experience with setting up the Seagate external hard drive was frustrating, following these steps made all the difference. Now that I have it set up correctly, it works like any other reliable external drive. I do wish brands should make these processes easier, but SeaGate is a great, trusted brand. Good luck with your setup!

the wait was totally worth it!

it took quite a while for the hard disk to get to me, but the wait was totally worth it… reformatted it for my mac mini… no problem at all… i just test transferred a file over, it seems fine and oh, so silent… me likey… so technically my need for a hard disk is taken care of by this for another 20 months… i hope! lol!

Lifesaver when my new laptop failed in one week backing up critical papers

Thank the stars I had the good sense to pick up this backup device, after a lot of work transferring work documents – for taxes, in case of layoff, pictures I wanted to keep. There’s a lot of ways to back up files, but not thrilled with the idea of hackable “clouds”. Anyway this was practically plug and play, easily moving files from an HP laptop to the drive, from the drive to a Dell. Good thing when the brand new HP had a “bios” error after 1 week. Liked it so much I bought a second for a duplicate backup. This drive may fail one day, but in the meantime was a lifesaver. And 2 backups are better than one. Copies fast, too.A pleasure to use; wish I could say the same about my new laptop that’s headed to a repair shop. This drive let me pull off any personal documents BEFORE handing laptop over for repair. Will buy more for presents.

    Perfect!

This works so well!! I didn’t know if it would work well but it’s perfect. The size is good and it doesn’t take long at all to boot up. It doesn’t heat up really and the quality is amazing. I will be coming back to get a higher TB.

Just plug it in and backup your computer

My other external drive I was getting a error message not recognized. Thought my computer was the issue. Plugged this one in and held my breath. No issue backed up around 400 gigs of document pictures and videos. No problems quick transfer

Lots of space for photos and files

Thought that my 4TB Seagate drive would be large enough to hold all my photo’s, video’s my music files. Not realizing that I enjoy taking pics and vids of almost every day. There are some reviews that seem to have an issue with the drive making a lot of noise. From my experience the drive clicks a bit when the read/write head is searching for files on the disc. But there have been no excessive noises when the drive is in use. So if you’re really into taking a lot of pictures this is a great option for storage.

    Puzzled by File Security

I used mine for 5 years, carrying it from place to place and have been happy with it until the last several months. Suddenly it is making my files only available to the person who originally wrote them on the original laptop. Sometimes another person can access them with administrator credentials and sometimes not even that. I don’t see how to fix the problem so I am buying a new one. Fortunately, this is Backup B and I have the original files on Backup A.

Easy to use, compact, holds a ton!

This was perfect! Small/compact, holds a ton of storage. Important note – thanks to whomever wrote how to format it for MAC. We have an old desktop running Catalina version with APFS (not an extended supported version any longer). It was so easy from the instructions that person gave, instead of what Seagate showed (which didn’t work). Just plug it in, search disk utility and select the seagate and select erase. Then name it and hit erase – ready to transfer your files to.

    Good backup drive

Very easy to use. I was able to back up my Windows 7 files very quickly which was important as my laptop is old and I have many important files i do not want to risk losing. I had previously used a different brand of drive which proved not to be reliable. I think this was a much better choice.

I usually love Seagate drives, but this one seems to “sleep” randomly.

This is a great brand! I expected this to be a PNP drive and it is that. My problem with this drive is that it seems to go to sleep. I sometimes have to wait 30 seconds or so for it to be writeable again. This makes my scanning of client docs take much longer than I would like. It’s not an SSD drive, but I couldn’t find another by a name I trust and that is available at a price I can afford. So, until I can afford another drive, I will keep this drive.

    Good product…poor delivery

Product is exactly what I needed. The delivery, however, sucked! They say it was by the front door which is a lie. It was left by my garage door right under a sign that says “do not leave packages here.” Just too lazy to walk around to the front porch. Good thing it wasn’t raining!!

Easy to use and very capable device.

This is an incredible drive. It was easy to set up and connect to my iMac. It occupies just a small space on my desktop and is very quiet. I use it as computer backup and, because of its speed, it’s perfect as temporary expanded memory for my Photoshop projects.

    Amazing

I’m using this to store all my photos on as I do not like to use the cloud because I’m always worried about hacking. This will be working for me for many years to come with 5 TB and I am not a gamer!

If you’re on a MAC – read this review

The drive appears to work as expected. I bought this for my MacbookAir – not realizing the connecting cable is USB and not USB-C. If you’re on a MAC that has only USB-C ports, better to buy a backup drive with USB C cable or spend about $10 for a Micro B to USB-C cable to use with this Seagate drive – otherwise backing up is very very slow if you have to plug the hardrive into an adaptor first with usb port in order to then hook up with your MAC. Also – be sure to reformat this drive for a MAC – it comes formatted for a PC.
